What I Have Used to Create Master the Machines
This all started by me taking clinical notes as a fellow and as a junior attending in the cardiac operating room and intensive care unit with information coming from various places. Some from device manufacturers themselves, others from device reps, my attendings, random books or UpToDate excerpts and more. I owe it to my readers to show them where I have been, and still am obtaining the information I am learning and expounding upon in my course! I have laid them out below and will continue to add to them as I continue to expand on my materials!
Manual of Perioperative Care in Adult Cardiac Surgery
The quintessential cardiac surgical ICU handbook, commonly known as Bojar (the author!). This book is great for guiding not only post operative management, but surgical approaches, indications, and much more!
Kaplan's Essentials of Cardiac Anesthesia
An awesome, easy to read textbook that focuses on the anesthetic management of cardiac surgical patients. It also discussed topics like echocardiography, cath lab, materials and more!
The Alfred: ECMO Guidelines
As one of the busiest ECMO centers in the world, the Alfred in Australia has put together and publicly put out guidelines and recommendations that they use when managing their ECMO patients in the ICU. Everything from how they select patients to methods of cannulation to ramp trials and more, this is an unbelievable (and free!) resource!
The University of Toronto: icuECMO Quick Reference
Much like the Alfred, the University of Toronto is one of the busiest ECMO centers in the world and the incredible clinicians there have put together an incredible ECMO resource with guidance on how they select and manage their ECMO patients! Again, totally free!

Thoratec Corporation HeartMate 3 Left Ventricular Assist System Instructions for Use
Like the Impella book, this IFU handbook published DIRECTLY from the makers of the HeartMate 3 LVAD, this a wealth of knowledge written and published online by the company itself and contains all sorts of information regarding mechanisms and management of the LVAD pump system.
American Society of Echocardiography: Echo Guidelines
These free guidelines published by the American College of Cardiology on echocardiography are an incredible tool for being up to date on measurements, values, how to perform, and much more!
ELSO Website and Clinical Guidelines
An invaluable resource for better understanding ECMO, who we put on, why we put on, and the general governing recommendations from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization.

A monster textbook and a lynchpin of anesthesia education, this served as a great resource to better understand monitors and some of the complex cardiopulmonary physiology we see in the OR with complex cardiac disease
